Carbon deposits can form on intake valves and other engine components from the oil mist that is introduced by blow-by gases from the PCV system. On gasoline direct-injection engines this problem is compounded because there is no fuel to wash the oil mist off the back of the valves. As the carbon deposits build up, engine performance suffers, often setting off DTCs. Removing these harmful deposits by mechanical means or chemical solvents requires a costly service visit.
